Character

I no longer recall where I read that this is an unjustifiably neglected great book. Wherever it may have been, I am in complete agreement. I had never heard of the author nor of the book and now need to investigate Bordewijk (1884-1965) further. The book was written in 1938 and takes place in Rotterdam in the decade or two after the end of World War One. The novel follows Katadreuffe, born out of wedlock to an unusually determined self-denying woman who refuses to marry the man who fathered her son or to accept any assistance from him, her circumstances notwithstanding. The father, Dreverhaven, is a bailiff, responsible for enforcing debts, especially among the poor, and he is a creature out of Dickens. Indeed, the work as a whole has show more more than a whiff of Dickens. Katadreuffe grows up, intent on becoming a lawyer despite enormous obstacles, and he is a unusually self-disciplined, even fanatical, young man. Although father and son have few interactions, the novel fully justifies its subtitle: “a novel of son and father.” Character is, indeed, aptly titled and one is inescapably drawn to reflect on its manifestations in Katadreuffe and in his parents. It is, I think, really an extended meditation on the way character manifests itself in people and what it means. The leave-taking between son and father at the end of the novel is particularly noteworthy and in view of all that has preceded it, is an especially powerful scene. In addition, Bordewijk’s depiction of Rotterdam and of the small cast of characters is unsparing and poignant. Although not without its issues, I highly recommend the book. show less

F. Bordewijk's 1938 semi-autobiographical novel, CHARACTER, considered a classic of Dutch literature, was not published in English until 1966. I only recently heard about it, and found a 1990 edition from New Amsterdam Books. It gives us the story of young Jacob Katadreuffe, the illegitimate son of a servant girl and a notoriously ruthless bailiff named Dreverhaven. Raised in a Rotterdam slum, the boy gets his stoic character from his mother, who makes a living as an embroiderer, never complains and refuses any sort of charity, even from Dreverhaven, who offers both financial support and marriage. After a few false starts at finding his place in the working world, one of which leaves him bankrupt, young Jacob gets on at a law firm, show more working his way up from office boy to typist to head clerk and office manager, continuously improving and educating himself, finally earning a law degree and joining the firm. Along the way he clashes numerous times with his father, the bailiff, emerging victorious on that front. But he misses his chance romantically with an attractive clerk, due to his determined drive to succeed at all costs, and she marries someone else.

I thought of CHARACTER as a kind of upgraded, more adult-oriented Horatio Alger story, with its hero going from rags to - well, at least respectability. Overall I found it rather disappointing in its plot predictability and in the dry-as-dust characters. I was reminded of grad school days when I was forced to read Richardson's PAMELA, Hawthorne's YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN, and the works of Dreiser, Howells, Norris and the like, some (but not all) of which felt like pointless drudgery. In these times, i don't think CHARACTER holds up very well as a novel. For me it was a "just okay" read, and something of a slog. Classic or not, I couldn't recommend it. Sorry, Mr Bordewijk.

Ferdinand Bordewijk ist eine echte Entdeckung, und für die deutsche Erstveröffentlichung im Jahr 2007 gebührt dem Münchener Beck-Verlag Respekt. Charakter ist ein in nüchterner Sprache geschriebenes und gleichwohl fein ziseliertes, psychologisches Portrait einer deformierten Familie und ein geschickt komponierter Gesellschaftsroman, der zwar in den 30er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts angesiedelt ist, dessen Themen & Personal jedoch frisch & zeitgemäß sind und kein bißchen angejahrt: großartiges Buch!

Ik had de film van Karakter een aantal jaren geleden al gezien en ben het altijd een bijzondere film blijven vinden. Bovendien stond het bij ons in de kast. Daarom was dit een duidelijke keus toen ik boeken moest gaan lezen voor mijn Nederlands literatuurlijst.

Karakter gaat over de moeizame relatie tussen de jonge Katadreuffe en zijn vader Dreverhaven. Beide zijn ze ongekend koppig en de relatie is dan ook zeer moeizaam. De zoon groeide niet op bij zijn vader, die zijn moeder verkracht had, maar bij zijn al even koppige moeder. We zien de ontwikkeling van Katadreuffe.

Een bijzonder boek. Ik vond het mooi. Het verhaal was me al bekend vanwege het feit dat ik de film al gezien had. Wat ik zo bijzonder vond aan het verhaal show more vooral, was dat het zich afspeelt in het Rotterdam voordat het werd platgegooid. Het heeft een bepaalde sfeer (vrij Amsterdam-achtig) zonder dat het gekunstseld voorkomt, wantja, dit is gewoon geschreven toen Rotterdam er nog zo uitzag. Als ik nu in Rotterdam kom, vind ik het altijd zo ongezellig door al die torens die een zo onnederlands beeld geven. Toch zou ik er niet vaak genoeg aan denken dat het eerst een heel andere stad was. Ik vond dat het boek goed te lezen, het was allemaal goed te volgen. Ik heb het gelezen voor mijn lijst, er verder geen vragen over gehad tijdens mijn examen, maar ik vond dat dit een boek was dat goed is om op je lijst te zetten. Het is niet dik, het leest niet te moeilijk, kortom, Karakter is zeer goed geschikt om te lezen voor je literatuurlijst. show less

Karakter was een van de boeken die ik 'leuk' vond op de middelbare school. Goede literatuur, een en al kwaliteit, maar het raakte me niet helemaal.

Tot ik de film van Mike van Diem zag in de bioscoop. Ik ben er 2 keer naartoe gegaan en heb hem op video ook nog een keer of 6 gezien. Fantastisch. Gek genoeg ben ik het boek hier alleen maar meer door gaan waarderen, en het was inderdaad nog beter toen ik het herlas.

emd door zijn armoedige jeugd als zoon van een ongehuwde moeder in vooroorlogs Rotterdam en gedwarsboomd door zijn vader, de machtige deurwaarder Dreverhaven, weet een jonge man zich toch op te werken van kantoorklerk tot advocaat. Dit na zoveel jaar nog in geen enkel opzicht verouderde boek is met zijn feilloze compositie (zelfs show more in de titels der hoofdstukken), zijn heldere zakelijke stijl en zijn psychologische diepgang een klassiek werk in onze literatuur. Het ontbreekt terecht zelden op literatuurlijsten van scholieren vwo en havo. De verfilming door Mike van Diem werd met een Oscar bekroond. show less

Zeer sterke karaktertekening. Portret van Rotterdam en vele achterbuurten (voor bombardement van 1940). Botsing van harde karakters. Maar ook leegheid van de principiële opstelling.
