The Blues Brothers [1980 film]

Ex-con musicians try to save an orphanage.

I love the way this movie builds. It opens in silence, with several minutes of dirty shots of Joliet prison, starting at night with the light of dawn gradually glowing through the smog. It ends with the complete opposite tone: one of the most absurd, over-the-top, cartoonish car chases ever filmed. And in between, it builds gradually enough that it feels as if big-budget silliness is just the natural outcome of that indie-film opening.

Tras pasar años en la cárcel por robo a mano armada, Jake Blues es puesto en libertad por buen comportamiento. Sale de prisión vestido de la misma forma en la que entró: traje y sombrero negro y gafas oscuras. Vestido de idéntica manera, lo espera en la puerta de la prisión su hermano Elwood, que lo informa de que el orfanato de Santa Elena, el único hogar que conocieron, corre el peligro de desaparecer por razones económicas. Sin dudarlo ni un momento los hermanos se ponen manos a la obra.
