Grace Merridew, the youngest of the Merridew sisters, is about to turn twenty-one, and she simply cannot fall in love. She's tried to fall for the young men vying for her affections, but none of them stirs the deep feelings she sees in her sisters' marriages. She plans to spend the rest of her life travelling and seeing the world, but she postpones her plans to help her friend Melly Pettifer.
Melly and Grace have been friends since school where Grace defended Melly against bullies. Now Melly's father is forcing her into marriage with Dominic Wolfe - the only way he can come into his ancestral property. So Grace disguises herself as a companion to protect Melly and to try and make her father see reason. But 'Greystoke' is soon adopted by show more the villagers as their 'Grey Lady' and she tries to make the estate a home... all while she's slowly falling for the master.
Dominic experienced heartbreak at an early age. His mother and he left his father when he was young and he grew up in poverty on the continent until his father found him and forced him to go to school in England cut off from all he loved as well as his father. Now he's determined to regain what is rightfully his, and never to marry for love.
This was my least favorite of the Virtue Sisters books, although Grace was my favorite sister throughout the other novels. There was nothing that really distinguished this novel from the usual Regency fare. While it was amusing, it lacked the emotional depth and the humor that made the others in the series so exceptional. The emotional difficulties of the characters were simply not helped by the other as was the case in the other books. They simply didn't seem to need each other and the sexual tension between the two was off (though really only compared to the others).
I enjoyed the glimpses into the lives of Dominic's tenants and friends, but this simply wasn't a must-read. Unlike with the others in the series I did not find myself alternately laughing out loud and discreetly wiping tears from my eyes.
A well-written Regency novel by objective standards, but disappointing when compared to the rest of the Virtue Sisters stories. show less

The hidden identity was kept a bit too long IMO, and the story meandered a little toward the end. But the main characters were likable and had book chemistry and character growth. I enjoyed it.
This book was probably my least favorite of this series, but it was still pretty good. Grace is the youngest of the four Merridew sisters, and while I enjoyed all of their books a great deal, this one seemed a bit forced. Grace never had a whole lot of personality to me (certainly nothing next to Prudence or Faith), and even in this book it seems that all she really has is that she's really pretty. Dominic is dark and romantic, but he's a bit two-dimensional as well. Nonetheless, this is a good read, if not a good conclusion to the series.
Just lovely all around. How did I miss this 4th volume when I read the other books in the series?
i really enjoyed this a lot. the big bad wolf made me shiver all over.
My favorite of the series, loved Dominic and Grace together!
