In the last few years I have had the misfortune to watch several families devastated by the husband engaging in multiple, simultaneous affairs. These affairs were not something that came from no where, but a series of smaller decisions, some that seemed innocent, that led to amazing destruction. Everyman's Struggle is a book that has been written to encourage men to live honorably, to protect their hearts and marriages. There are a number of cautionary tales paired with practical suggestion that I think some men would find useful. My biggest critique is that the book doesn't get to the heart of the issue or go far enough. Much of the book is about how to stay out of trouble by building good habits. This is a good start, but a focus on show more stopping / avoiding leaves your focused on what your are trying to avoid. I think the ultimate solution is to replace a focus of self gratification (or self denial) with a focus on care and service for other's benefit. To be more like Jesus in all your interactions, and to live, as he did, empowered by God's Spirit. I think anyone who followed what is recommended in this book, and went no further would not see long term success, and very well might see the quality of their relationships, especially with the opposite sex grow worse, not better. I much better book is Porn Free by Brian Gardner. show less
I hesitate to poo-poo this book because some may find it helpful (hence I gave it two stars rather than one). This is a Christian-self help book which endevors to aide men overcome sexual temptation by training their eyes away from women (other than their wives). Beyond not being particularly realistic, this book lacks an overarching theological view of human sexuality. Being able to quote a few Bible verses and say "if Job can train his eyes so can you" does not amount to a thoughtful reflection of God's purpose and design for human sexuality. I do think that there are somethings that this book says which would be good medicine for some men, but it says somethings badly and doesn't say somethings enough.
I think there is a detency in Christianity to only talk about the sins that affect other people and not "us." Abortion, homosexuality, and the like get sermon after sermon. We even get lectures on smoking, which the Bible does not speak about at all. Meanwhile, other struggles are kept in the dark out of embarrassment. Lust and pornography run rampant in the Church, and whenever someone talks about them, they are hushed down.
This book takes on the subject head on and without apology. It's about time! The authors give a very clear and good explanation of what the problem is, and some ideas to deal with it.
This book is a must read for anyone who struggled with sexual temptation (as in, all the men and half of the women).

This book is a good tool to combat the mediocrity seeping in to our lives. ALthough centrally focused on sexual purity by God's standards, it is a reminder that in all things, God's way is best.
It is a nicely written book and easily read. There is a very helpful "step-by-step" process to overcome sexual impurity and allow God to have full control of your life.

Extremely helpful.
This book tries to integrate Biblical Counseling with secular psychology
