Delightfully illustrated with a crew of animal pirates, the rhyming text in this book details the pirates’ search for letters other than “R” so that they can be tough! And just to make sure that this bumbling crew follows his orders, the pirate captain decrees they’ll walk the plank if they don’t find every single letter.
Young readers will delight in the antics of the pirate crew as they learn the alphabet. The illustrations are a perfect companion to the text, making this adventure pure fun for pirate-loving readers of all ages.
Highly recommended.

This was a fun letter hunt adventure. The rhymes were nice, the cadence fun, and the illustrations put it on top to be a book that could be read at storytime over and over again.
"Having decided that R is not enough for them, a bumbling band of pirates sets sail on a quest to capture the rest of the alphabet.
The captain of this brave and bumbling pirate crew has ordered them to capture the entire alphabet--and they'll walk the plank if they're missing a single letter! Now these swashbuckling mateys are embarking on an alphabet adventure unlike any other, and they won't (ahem, can't) rest until they've found an A, a Z, and everything in between.
June Sobel's hilarious text and Henry Cole's adventurous animal pirates harmonize in an irresistible book for alphabet-learning, pirate-loving kids everywhere." -- GoodReads

A super fun book to read. It doesn't only give you an alphabet with words that begin with the letter, instead it tells a story about a pirate who wants more letters than just an "R." The pirate and his crew land on an island and start searching for the letters all over. A great book for parents to start teaching their kids the alphabet, or pre k teachers to introduce the alphabet to children.
Summary:
This is a pirate story where instead of look for buried treasure the pirates are looking for buried letters. They find these letter all over the island they stop on. The some of the letters are on objects they find. Such as a turtle with a t on it, or a map with the letter m on it.
Person Reaction:
I thought this book was very cute and a fun way to learn the alphabet. It teaches kids in a fun and new way about letters and objects related to them besides the typical A for apple. The illustrations play a big role in telling the story and the hunt for the letters.
Classroom Extensions:
1) Have a Pirate Day where the students find the letters of the alphabet in the classroom and bring them to the boat which is my desk.
2) Have a Pirate show more Day where the students have dressed up as pirates and act out the story. show less

The pirates in Shiver Me Letters: Pirate’s ABC by June Sobel decide that they want letters other than “R,” a concept I found quite amusing. They go on a search, using the anchor to find A, finding a C engraved on the cannonball, etc.
