Thirteen-year-old orphan Verity Sparks works as a milliner in Victorian London. She has an extraordinary talent for finding things that are lost. Verity is falsly accused of theft and dismissed from her job, but the Confidential Inquiry Agency is on the case. The family take Verity in and her talent helps them solve cases. Verity is haunted by her unknown circumstances of birth. She receives poison pen letters, is chased through London's dark alleys, takes part in séances and helps to care for pet pythons. Verity is a very likeable character in this tale of murder and intrigue. A good read plus I liked the cover.
