Description

Following Jeffrey Brown's debut hit, Clumsy, Unlikely continues to explore the nature of relationships in this story of how Jeffrey Brown lost his virginity. A full-length graphic novel of excruciating detail and intimacy, drawn in an awkward style that both disarms the reader and heightens the emotional impact of the work.

i don't know anything about the cats, but i know i liked this one, and the other bits of his stuff i've seen around in collections and whatnot. it's for girls who like boys, boys who like girls, boys who like boys, girls who like girls, boys who like cats, girls who like t-shirts, and everybody else.
[...] Brown's aesthetic is unsettling to me; it is pointedly sketchy, like a teenager's tortured, shy doodlings. But the character he draws for himself evokes a wincing sympathy, and almost everyone will recognize the delicate, detailed realism with which he outlines the progress of love.

Despite a few glaring editorial mishaps - in one instance using the wrong to/too form - I enjoyed Unlikely. The illustrations sell the emotions the characters go through in what plays out as a typical romance gone sour. All the ingredients of your everyday failed relationship - the whirlwind beginning - the descent into the mundane and repetitive - the pushback - and the breakaway. Perfect medicine for the bitter and brokenhearted.
So apparently I like graphic novels. It took me a minute to get used to the drawings and the written text, but I quickly found that it added a lot. So much more could be said with a simple drawing than can be conveyed with pages and pages of text.

This one follows Jeff's burgeoning relationship with Allyson, the excitment of a new love, the loss of his virginity at 24 and the eventual falling apart of said relationship. It made me long for that newness myself and then immediately grateful I don't have to go through the inevitibility of reality.
Sad comic about a nice guy. The art style may not be for everyone, but I like it.
