Told from the point of view of Medraut, who figured that he was set to replace Ambrosius Aurelianus, this is a good example of the gritty school of Arthur stories. It was the first Arthur novel that I read after the childhood collection of Pyle's Arthur. Scarred me for life, I suppose, I've always felt that it was an edited edition with a longer novel out there somewhere... ( )
