Description

Ellie is a sweet-natured brunette, generous of heart with a sparkling smile and an accent which reveals her East End background. Bonny is beautiful and spoilt, with cascades of blonde hair, the brightest pair of blue eyes and a mouth like Cupid's bow. The two girls meet in London at the end of the war when, seduced by two American airmen, they pool their wits and resources and set off to make a living on the stage. Set against the hardship and austerity of post-war Britain, and the glamour show more and ruthlessness of life in variety theatre, their story is one of sacrifice and burning ambition. But most of all of a powerful friendship that lasts against all odds. show less

A chick-lit brick, picked up for a long train journey, with no expectations of it being very good, and mainly because of a coincidence of name. I enjoyed reading this, but found that it felt very unfinished at the end - despite the huge volume of material covered so far. It feels like there should be a sequel, although I have yet to work out if it exists. Set during and after the blitz this is a look at some of the darker sides of show business. Lesley Pearse keeps the writing engaging though, and the characters are a motley lot, and mostly interesting. Only recommended if you really like this sort of thing.

Lesley Pearse is one of the UK's best-loved novelists. she is a storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget. There is no formula to her books or easily defined genre. Whether crime as in 'Till We Meet Again', show more historical adventure like 'Never Look Back', or the passionately emotive 'Trust Me', based on the true-life scandal of British child migrants sent to Australia in the post war period, she engages the reader completely. Her title Without a Trace made the New Zealand Best Seller List in 2015. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
