This book is probably best for coaches or the extremely motivated athlete. It starts with a lot if interesting, albeit over my head biology, and then goes into a lot of detail about endurance and how it is achieved and what it is good for. As with all of the great Human Kinetics books it includes training plans for various distance sport events, however the running ones are rather hardcore for a beginner or intermediate runner and are 6-month training programs. As a long distance runner of over 6 years I was looking forward to this book, but it made me feel overwhelmed. I would, however, hope to someday hire a coach who has read this book!!
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I was so excited to receive this book! After months and months of weightlifting and little cardio, I decided that I wanted to boost what short endurance spurts I had in order to raise my overall endurance level. I was a little overwhelmed when I turned to the ultramarathon page and saw a 75+ mile training schedule - not exactly what I had in mind. However, the book also lists perfect training schedules for 5k races and 10k races. Perfect! The book is easy to use and the schedules are spelled out for the reader. Best of all, the beginning of the book explains why the schedules are used, why some days are more difficult than others, how the body works, etc. This is exactly what I was looking for and I highly recommend it to others.
