Series of books featuring a popular character, like the Berenstain Bears or Little Critter, have a hard time with the holiday-themed stories. They are so focused on finding a tale to fit the theme that the writing is overblown and sloppy. I was pleasantly surprised that this book was a much better attempt at portraying the Easter holiday. The text is simple and clear, in keeping with the other books in the series. It innocently portrays an old-fashioned Easter celebration, with Easter baskets and dressing up and church and the egg hunt. Emphasis on the egg hunt. It is appropriate in presenting the child's interest in the holidays, and still features the adorable illustrations that are a trademark of the Little Critter series. However, show more the story is a bit dull, and lacks some of the charm of other books featuring the same characters. I've fallen in love with the little Critter series because it captures a child's perspective so well, but blends in great tongue-in-cheek humor that a parent appreciates. This particular title observes Easter from a child's point of view, but is missing that subtle humor I love. It's better than other holiday attempts in different series, but not as good as other titles in the Little Critter series. show less
I also had mixed feelings about this book. I liked the book for some reasons and I didn't like the book for other reasons. I liked the book because since it was a book about easter the author wrote about the traditional aspects and also some of the religion that comes with easter. I liked when the author spoke about of critter felt when he woke up and how he got competitive with his sister during the easter egg hunt because children could relate to critter, I could even relate to critter because I do most of the same things around easter time. I liked the characters because they were believable to readers and they were also well developed. One thing I didn't like about the book would be that there wasn't enough words on one page and show more sometimes I would get distracted by the illustrations because they didn't go along with the words of they were too detailed that I forgot to read what was on the page. The main idea of this book would be that the reader gets to see all the joys of easter throughout the day of critter. And that he learns to appreciate not only the fun things about easter but the religious aspects behind easter as well. show less
Although Mayer does a nice job capturing the beloved Little Critter in a story filled with egg hunts and chocolate, she falls a little short in this book as it does not have as good as a story line/plot as the other books in the Critter series.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction because it talks about the traditions the little critter's family has on Easter morning. These traditions may not be exactly what everyone does, but they are realistic and some people may really do these things. This book is really cute but I would be skeptical about reading it to a class since religion may be an issue. However, if you did; a fun activity would be to have the students tell what they do on Easter. You could also have them draw a picture of their favorite Easter activity or have a little Easter egg hunt. The illustrations are hand-drawn or computer generated and colored using water-color paints. They are really detailed and colorful. I really like this book because it is simple show more and everyone is happy. The reading level is probably second grade because some of the words are fairly difficult. The curricular connections are: traditions, Easter, eggs, family, church, and love. show less
Students really enjoy Little Critter books because they can relate to his life (mom, dad, little sister, friends, school, etc.) The Easter book is about patience, obedience to parents, and sharing. The illustrations are cute, and there is a different book for each season and holiday.

This book was a fun modern fantasy to read. I would read this book in my classroom to talk about Easter. It wasn't my favorite book, but I enjoyed it.
This book is about a little critter that is excited about Easter morning. The little boy wakes up and wants to get to the candy first, but his sister is already there. The family then goes to church and people are dressed up with goofy hats that the little boy can see over. The children then dye Easter eggs and the parents hide them after the picnic is over. All and all it was a good Easter. I would like to read this book to the class, but be careful cause half of the book has do to with church.
