Waley’s translation of Confucius’s teachings is as nuanced as it gets. Included are copious notes on the choice of phrases and as well as reference to many other Chinese philosophical texts. The Analects themselves are as dense and as beautiful as any psalm. The text requires many readings before anything called meaning can be gleaned, but is ultimately worth the effort. Any study of Eastern thought should start here.

This volume contains the Analects, the central text of the Confucian tradition. It is the readable translation of Arthur Waley. It also has an introduction to some of the basic terms, for example,'jen' which Waley translates as "good" while render the chinese character as "human heartedness," and notes on the text, and ritual. A good place to begin your study of Chinese chiao or teaching.
