Cowen is one of my favorite thinkers and bloggers. I did not care for his pop books, however, and so I nearly missed this gem from his pre-blogging days. It's an academic work, but it's accessible to anyone interested in culture who took a few econ classes. It's a rare combination: fine analysis combined with wide-ranging and deep knowledge.
The book is basically an argumentation against what it defines as "cultural pessimism". Unfortunately it goes no further than common sense.
