Description

On a late winter's day in 1972, a kitten soon to be named Dulcy found a woman worthy to be her human. For the next 17 years, Dulcy and her human learned to communicate on a level deeper than language and to comfort one another with affectionate routines that softened the shocks of an inconstant world.

This is a beautifully illustrated book and it is interesting to read the story from a cat’s point of view. I found the book a bit too sentimental but still shed a tear at the end!

Unabashedly anthropomorphic, life from birth to death of a very special cat is told from a feline point of view. As special as our heroine is, the allure of this book is grounded in Dulcy's immediately recognizable personality in other cats who have adopted their own humans, namely ours.

In this story, filled to the brim with love, we are allowed to view a cross-species intimacy of deeply mutual need, comfort, joy, and pain over the span of 17 years. Having an indoor-only cat, I cringed at the dangerous freedom Dulcy enjoyed. Yet, there was a strong bond between human and cat which engendered trust and attentive caring. Dulcy lived a satisfying long cat life.

Yes, indeed. This was a heartfelt little book which brought tears to my eyes - show more a rare occurrence. show less

This is the story of a cat's life, from beginning to end, told from the point of view of the cat, Dulcy. She was brought home by her human as a kitten and lived her entire life with that one human... with a couple of other cats added to the family along the way, some moves, some separations, and lots of love.

No surprise here, how much I loved this book! There were smiles, laughs and plenty of tears! Anyone who has ever lived with a cat, or even those who love any kind of animal – I can't imagine any of those people could dislike this book. Just be careful about not reading it in public and have a big box of Kleenex with you. I have to admit a lot of the ending was difficult for me. It would have been anyway, but Dulcy had the same show more problem as my previous cat (kidney failure), which hit really close to home. There were also some beautiful illustrations in my ebook edition. show less

Only a true cat lover could have written this story so well and from her heart. Dee Ready truly captures the essence of a cat. Told from Dulcinea's view, (Dulcy, the cat), we see how Dulcy trains her human and most important, the loving bond shared by the two. I could not stop reading till I was done, the story is that riveting. It's funny, it's sad, full of cat adventures, and yes, a tear jerker. I LOVED THIS BOOK!

This slender volume is Dulcy's beautiful poetic memoir of life with her human. It is a story of love, laughter, and tears. Dulcy tells through passages of deep description and snippets of song of teaching her unwhiskered feline, her special human of life and need, of language and desire, of listening and comfort. It is a hauntingly enchanted story of life told by a well loved and admired cat.

I admit I cried and found my big kitten to snuggle as together we read the (for me) blurred words of the final chapters. I hope my Shadow's memoir will be one that remembers as much love and admiration as Dulcy and that even with some ups and downs (such as the temporary intrusion of foster kittens to his life from time-to-time) he will still show more believe that love remains.

This is a beautiful book that celebrates the unselfish loving bond uniting a cat and her human. I am thankful for the opportunity to have read it.

I loved this book! I’ve had cats in my life ever since I can remember, and cannot imagine a life without one or two or three with me. I have often pondered how they must think and feel regarding living with humans. In Dulcy’s Story, Dee Ready described wonderfully (in Dulcy’s words) our differences in language & nuance, food & nutrition, habits & behavior … all which made reading this book a wonderful and emotionally moving experience. I particularly was touched by the passages where Dulcy expresses her awareness of her own aging process and deteriorating health. I highly recommend this book! And I can hardly wait to read the next one … A Cat’s Legacy.

Written from a cat's perspective of life with her human. From kitten hood to her death. Happy and sad. I laughed and I cried. Truly reflected my experience with cats. A touching tribute to Dulcy. A cat lover must-read!
