What if Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was told from a cat's point of view? On the heels of smash hits like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I Can Has Cheezburger, this hilarious mash-up by children's author Pamela Jane and photographer Deborah Guyol spins a fresh, quirky take on two of the things we just can't get enough of: classic cats and classic Jane. Pride and Prejudice and Kitties juxtaposes wacky photos of cats with the wicked humor of Jane Austen, and it's just in time for the 200-year anniversary of the publication of the original Pride and Prejudice. Soulful Mr. Darcy gazes at Elizabeth Bennet in fascination; hysterical Mrs. Bennet yowls that no one understands her; somnolent Mr. Hurst passes out on the sofa after dinner; arrogant Lady Catherine hisses at Elizabeth. Each photo includes a hilarious caption that goes along with the text of Pride and Prejudice, told from a feline perspective. Pride and Prejudice and Kitties is a book for cat-lovers, Austen-lovers, and people who love to laugh--in other words, just about everyone. The adorable meets the absurd!… (more)

Exactly what it sounds like. Partial text of P&P edited with all the main characters now being cats. Novel idea for the first third, but then not so much. Mr. Darcy has ten thousand mice a year, plus an extra three lives. When they all get excited about a ball, it is because it has a bell inside it. There is brief mention of whether or not Anne deBourgh, sickly creature, should have been put down. Clever, but maybe better if shorter. ( )

This is a (partial) rewrite of “Pride and Prejudice” with all the characters as cats.

It was cute; it was silly; it was ok. There were some parts that made me smile or laugh. It’s a short, fast read. There were cat photos included with subtitled phrases from the book to fit the photo; the photos were taken specifically for the book (and they thanked the people and cats in the acknowledgments at the end; I thought one of my cats had an unusual name, but it was kind of fun to see one of the photographed cats also has his name: Io.) Some of the actual text of P&P was included, as well. It went back and forth between the characters as cats and the actual text (which didn’t take away from the characters as cats – that is, it still “fit”). The text of the original is in italics, so easy to tell. ( )

My first suggestion for someone reading the eBook is to see it in a larger format than Kindle if possible. The pictures display to better advantage.

I found this mostly mildly amusing, with numerous pictures, some of which are really spot on. The cats are chiefly shown as cats, not ersatz human beings in clothing. I love the cover with the cat in a bonnet, looking like she is trying to figure out how this happened, and how fast she can get it off. Actually, when I think of some of the things that people think are funny, I have to congratulate the book for being amusing, not using vulgar language, and not being obscene. I could share it with anyone I know. I don't know how Jane Austen would feel about parodies, but I'm sure she'd like this a lot better than some of the others.

The book is abridged, but the story is still clear. It alternates between sections adapted to refer to cats, and sections from the original book to string them together so that they make sense.

Readers may also wish to see Downton Tabby, a parody of the iconic television series with cats standing in for the human actors. In addition there is A Guinea Pig Pride and Prejudice, which is pretty self-explanatory, and is apparently one of a series of Guinea Pig classics, including Oliver Twist, Romeo and Juliet, and a Nativity.

I wanted to hug the authors of this book! It combines two of my favorite things: Austen and cats! Seemingly, the much loved Pride & Prejudice characters are all cats who behave as regency humans. They enjoy balls, having a "Fancy feast," and activity seek a mate with good papers and comfortable satin pillows. Mr. Darcy is a fancy breed with 10,000 mice a year, while Lizzy is a country cat.

The book follows the spirit of P & P well, and also includes the original text. LOLcat-esque cat photos are also included in the chapters. Some are cute, some look strangely photoshopped.

But odd photos aside, it's a very cute book to add to your Austen collection. ( )

I enjoyed this. There were parts that were left out from Pride & Prejudice, but nothing that left a huge hole. It was very funny to see the characters as cats, especially the two most cattiest, Miss Bingley and Mrs. Hurst. ( )
