This is a eerie dark tale taking place in the brutal 1930s in the small community of Port Alma, Maine. A mysterious young woman arrives in the town, finds work, and wins the heart of Billy Chase, the owner of the local newspaper. Within a year, Billy is dead and the woman has fled. His brother Cal Chase obsessively searches for her but his reasons are complicated and he must confront some of his own demons as he uncovers her dark past.
Very good psychological drama with a stunning conclusion.

First words
More than anyone I ever knew, my brother Billy felt the rapid wings of summer, how it darted like a bird through the trees of Maine, skittered along streams and ponds, then soared away, bright and gleaming, leaving us behind,... (show all) shivering in coats and scarves.
