I haven't really cared for the past two novels in this series, but this is the third novella in a row that's been quite enjoyable. The premise is a bit wobbly (pretend engagements always are) but if you just go with that (and the bit of a mystery in this one) it's a fun little story.
"Listened to audio narrated by Angela Dawe. Steven drunkenly falls into Rose as she is accosted by journalists, thinking he's a soldier in need she whisks him away in her coach and tends him. He's a soldier in her Majesty's army and the Duchess is a widow hounded by press as a scandalous woman. After she takes him in believing he's a veteran in need, he repays the kindness by pretending to be betrothed to offset the vultures and help her get her inheritance her son-in-law is refusing her. There's a lot of romance, a little bit of intrigue and a little sadness on both their sides as they both mourn for those they lost.
A lovely short romance, with camios by all of our favorite Mackenzies."
