This book appears by the cover to be for small children but actually is written with language for middle+ ages. The story is about a father taking a month long trip to Africa while his family waits at home. The boy marks off the calendar each day Dad is gone and saves something from each day in a special box for Daddys return. This book uses imagery through its language and illustrations and has emotional spots. The illustrations are expressive of the deep sadness as they prepare for the trip. I could use this book as a mission prep or understanding as well as helping kids deal with a traveling parent. Grades 2+
This book seems a little advanced in the writing for the young kid who might be reading. Although the story would be useful for a child who misses a family member, it might not be the most exciting book to pull off the shelf.
A little boy’s father is leaving for a month-long trip to Africa. The boy feels badly but his father promises to everyday whisper the boy’s name and send out kisses. The boy promises to save up things that he can show-and-tell when his father returns. And so he does, always thinking of his dad until he returns home.
This book really made me appreciate my family. For most of the book I was very afraid to find out that his dad wont come back, but then was hugely relieved to see that his dad did get back safely. This book would be great for children's whose parents are over seas just like this little boys dad was.
"My Daddy's going to work, far away in Africa -- without me." Just for four weeks, but it feels like forever to this boy living in a snowy northern climate. Every day he thinks about him and wonders what it's like in Africa. The final scene is the airport where he is reunited with his father.
