Description

This edition combines the text of the ninth edition of Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon with an extensively revised and expanded Supplement. The Supplement is the culmination of thirteen years of research and constitutes a full revision of the previous 1968 Supplement. Containing over 20,000 entries, the Supplement includes coverage of words and forms from papyri and inscriptions discovered up to the present day. Entries in the Supplement also incorporate Linear B forms for the show more first time, extending the Lexicon's time span back to 1200 BC. show less

The value of this work is shown by the fact that it is still in print, in almost the same form as when Dean Liddell published it, and that there are two different abridged editions. Few dictionaries in any language can compare. It could perhaps be modernized, and the koine added, but for true classical works, it remains sufficient.

And the minor point that the senior author was the father of Alice (and Lorina, and Edith) Liddell just adds to the fun. My edition was actually being revised as Alice in Wonderland was working its way through the press.

Of course, you need to have an interest in classical Greek to want it....
Although it's age is indeed showing and a new Greek-English Dictionary needs to be compiled upon modern lexographical principles, there is still nothing else that compares to the LSJ in terms of completeness and depth of coverage in a single-volume non-specialized dictionary of Ancient Greek. It still remains indispensible to any serious student of the Greek Language. It does however get somewhat annoying where Liddell and Scott define all the naughty words in Latin. ψωλή, membrum virile praeputio retracto? Please...
An absolutely fabulous book. It includes citations on usage, and development over time.

This ought to be the last LS revised by piecemeal accretion—agglutinatively, as linguists say. The next time the job has to be done from the root. The present editors acknowledge the need, confessing that “many articles require a more drastic rewriting than can be achieved by the addition, exclusion, or alteration of individual items. Minor changes may in fact only highlight shortcomings show more in the original articles.” Time and money and restricted staff and an inability to make “a systematic use” of “electronic retrieval facilities” prevented the necessary radical overhaul from being undertaken this time. In making this obvious point, I fear seeming ungrateful for what has here been so meticulously and nobly done. [Note: This review refers to the 9th edition, published in 1996.] show less
