This book was precious and made me cry. It’s the story of Rags and his life during WW1 with a soldier and all the ways Rags was an indispensable help and comfort. After his soldiers death Rags eventually finds another military family to love and that loves him.
This book is a lot more complex than most picture books like it but it comes with a lot of information. It follows the story of Rags, a dog in the trenches of WWI. It fills us in on how remarkable of a dog Rags was and how unique Rags was. It is a good book for students who like animals. This book would be a good book for 3rd-5th grade readers.
Supposedly a nonfiction story but no source notes and what appears to be a heavy reliance on invented dialogue. As historical fiction, it's mediocre.
Dogs really are man's best friends. I hope Rags did live as well as the epilogue says.
