It is a story about Caterina Gomez who is half English, half Portuguese. She is summoned to Portugal by her father during uneasy times where tension is rife between Portugal, France and England. She arrives to a frustrating choice of marriage or convent; however, she gets entangled in intrigue and is drawn further into a web of uneasy alliances between the native Portuguese and English communities. It is a story about Caterina coming to age and finding what matters to a woman most - freedom - in the most troubling of times.
I would highly recommend this book as a historical novel, as the characters are meshed in very real history and at the end of the book, not only have you had the satisfaction of reading a good book, you also have show more learnt something about Portuguese history (if you didn’t know it already!) show less
