Wow, is this ever bad
Before DB found his true voice as the wild-eyed freak at the convention yelping, "No, you don't understand, this is all REAL," he got his start by trying to be the next Tom Clancy. The only problem was that, unlike Clancy, he half-assed his research, tried to get by on confident-sounding bluster, and wrote atrociously.
Highlights:
- Attempting to sound knowledgeable about soldiering by replacing normal terms like "wristwatch" with "military chronograph," then generically referring to every special forces rifle as a "machine gun."
- The worst comic relief in all literature.
- Dangling but withholding key pieces of information for many chapters in an attempt to manufacture suspense.
Honestly, if the man could stop with show more the unnecessary, dubious, know-it-all exposition, the book could be a lot shorter and more readable. Well, that and if he could stop resorting to repeated cliches like "eat my hat." But he's Dan Brown, so good luck with that. show less

Out of the four famous Dan Browns, I liked this one best. The actual
``mystery'', which you can see through after only a few pages, is resolved
halfway the book already, leaving you with another 200 pages of pure thriller
action, trying to figure out who the brain behind the deception is.
As always with Brown, very well written and unputdownable. Not the story of a
lifetime, but a very entertaining read nevertheless.

Deception Point by Dan Brown
4.5 Stars
From the Book:
When a new NASA satellite spots evidence of an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory...a victory that has profound implications for US space policy and the impending presidential election. With the Oval Office in the balance, the President dispatches White House Intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton to the Milne Ice Shelf to verify the authenticity of the find. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic academic Michael Tolland, Rachel uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery—a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy.
But before Rachel can contact show more the President, she and Michael are attacked by a deadly team of assassins controlled by a mysterious power broker who will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Fleeing for their lives in an environment as desolate as it is lethal, their only hope for survival is to find out who is behind this masterful ploy. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.
My Thoughts:
It started out rather slow but by the fourth chapter had started to really pick up the pace...and from there the story moves very fast and is full of twists and turns. It has a very clever plot in which you are never completely sure just who is 'the good guy". I loved that I was never completely sure what was going to happen or what I really wanted to happen. I can't say too much more without giving away the next reader's joy of immersing themselves in this very entertaining book. I did think that the author did a marvelous job of tying up the story lines into a very well done ending. The only thing that was missing in this one was all the puzzles that readers have come to associate with Dan Brown books. show less

I liked the story. Along with ghost stories…stories about ”things from the far deep, corners of outer space” also get a second and third glance from me and usually end up on my reading shelf. Welcome aboard [Deception Point]! Readers may find the start of the story to drag a bit… but just keep reading…it will pick up. At the outset of the story…Rachel, who is a senator’s daughter and a member of the National Reconnaissance Office, whose job it is to digest information into reports used by the White House… is whisked off to a spot somewhere near the Arctic Circle where NASA is trying to recover a meteor with what looks like fossils of extraterrestrial life on it from underneath two hundred feet of ice. Of course things show more aren’t quite what they seem. We find a small band of Delta Force soldiers secretly watching the NASA encampment. The more that Rachel learns about the meteor…with the help of popular scientist Michael Tolland and a NASA techie by the name of Corky…the less sense things make. Dan Brown…as usual… knows his material and how to make the “do -hicky gadgetry” more believable than the some of the characters… point in evidence, the Delta Force soldiers’ guns that create bullets out of snow…really cool… but not easily believable. Not saying it's impossible...but... As I said, I liked the story enough to give it 5 stars but it could have done well without all the government shenanigans and secret plots. show less
Be ready to put your suspension of disbelief skills into high gear for this one - you'll need them.
Like his other novels, Deception Point has relatively flat characters, is short on substance, and has a plot that's fairly unbelievable, relying heavily on coincidence to move forward. The chapters are short and the pace is fast. Like his other novels, this is "fact based fiction" - the exposition is heavily laiden with tidbits about science, history, and our amazing world.
Now, while that might sound like a damning review, it's actually not - that's exactly what you should expect from Dan Brown, and the kind of "pulp thriller" genre that he rights in. It's the kind of book that's meant to be read on a train or on the beach, the short show more chapters and shorter scenes making it easy to put down and pick up again without missing much. Which isn't to say that the action isn't constant making for a fairly engrossing page-turner.
Now, judging it in that context, Deception Point is only so-so. My biggest gripe with it is simply in the facts that pepper the plot - his revelations about the realities of the Arctic environment, sharks, and UFO sightings (among others) are far less obscure than the history that he drew upon to make Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code interesting. Deception Point also suffers from an especially unbelievable plot that makes suspension of disbelief quite a challenge.
It's worth reading if you're looking for something with pure entertainment value and are a fan of his other books - just don't expect too much else from it. show less

It's an excellent thriller a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm.
