Description

In this volume, William Barclay makes the most difficult book in the Bible easier to understand. In his introduction he examines areas such as the characteristics of apocalyptic literature and the nature of Caesar worship. John was, as Barclay shows, "soaked and saturated" in the Old Testament, and most of the imagery he employs is drawn from that source. Barclay clarifies the meaning of this imagery as he covers the central issues of the book of Revelation. For almost fifty years and for show more millions of readers, the Daily Study Bible commentaries have been the ideal help for both devotional and serious Bible study. Now, with the release of the New Daily Study Bible, a new generation will appreciate the wisdom of William Barclay. With clarification of less familiar illustrations and inclusion of more contemporary language, the New Daily Study Bible will continue to help individuals and groups discover what the message of the New Testament really means for their lives. show less

A good basic commentary on the first 5 chapters of the Revelation of John, which spends much time in the introduction and description of the seven churches of Asia.

Barclay's discussion of non-Biblical sources adds value to his discussion, but he also seems a bit too willing to interpret anything described by John regarding the seven cities in terms of the secular history of the city.

Overall, however, a very close reading and guide to Revelation 1-5.

Barclay's ‘The Daily Study Bible' has been cherished by millions throughout the world, and his style and popular appeal are renowned. His language and method are never academic, but always full of relevance to life and work today. He himself once said, 'I decided I must dedicate my life to making scholarship available for the layman, so that he may know better his Bible, his God and his Saviour'.
