ives a look into the core principles and sources of the Universal Unitarian association. Not a single religion, but rather a gathering of people with the same core values which includes coming to a personal theology.

Introduction of this edition particularly insightful.

Some of the writing seemed haphazard and not cohesive, but for the most part I enjoyed and learned from the book.
I read this when I was depressed about the outcome of Bush/Kerry, because apparently I'm my mother's daughter and turn to a higher power when depressed. I'm rereading this now because my mother died recently, so you may see more religion stuff here.
Solid introductory book about Unitarian Universalism. Slightly dated at times.
This book gives a brief summary and history of the Unitarian Universalism church. Excellent reading for someone curious about the UU denomanation.
This classic introductory text on Unitarian Universalism by John A. Buehrens, who served as President of the UUA, has been revised and includes a new forward by Robert Fulghum, author of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. This work was co-authored by Forrest Church, another distinguished UU minister, who wrote many other books important to the faith. Denise Davidoff provided a new preface. She and her husband, Jerry Davidoff, were honored with the Award for Distinguished Service to Unitarian Universalism in 2006.

Buehrens and Church both discuss their awakening experiences. The concept of deeds not creeds is explored, along with discussions about the known and unknown and other spiritual concepts. The book ends with a show more brief chronology of Unitarian Universalist history and includes suggestions for further reading. show less

Epigraph
The living tradition we share draws from many sources . . .
Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life.
Small as is our whole system compared with the infinitude of creation, brief as is our life compared to the cycles
of time, we are so tethered to all by the beautiful dependences of law, that not only the sparrow’s fall ... (show all)is felt at the
outermost bound, but the vibrations set in motion by the words that we utter reach through all space and the tremor is felt through all time.
- Maria Mitchell, nineteenth-century Unitarian and astronomer
I can believe a miracle because I can raise my own arm. I can believe a miracle because I can remember. I can believe it because I can speak and be understood by you.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, Unitarian minister and essayist
