Carol Emshwiller was born Agnes Carolyn Fries in Ann Arbor, Michigan on April 12, 1921. She received bachelor's degrees in music and design from the University of Michigan and attended the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1949-1950 as a Fulbright Fellow. She was best known as a short story writer. Her short stories show more collections included The Collected Stories of Carol Emshwiller and The Start of the End of It All and Other Stories, which won the World Fantasy Award. Her novels included Carmen Dog, Mister Boots, The Secret City, and The Mount, which won a Philip K. Dick Award. She also wrote a pair of western novels entitled Ledoyt and Leaping Man Hill. She won a Nebula Award in the short story category for Creature in 2003 and for I Live with You in 2006. She received a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2005.
