Kentucky Straight: Stories

Description

Kentucky straight is bourbon with no mixer. Kentucky Straight is Kentucky seen without nostalgic gloss. These riveting, often heartbreaking stories, take us through country that is unmapped. They are set in a nameless Appalachian community too small to be called a town, a place where wanting an education is a mark of ungodly arrogance and dowsing for water a legitimate occupation; where hunting is not a sport but a means of survival. These are stories of coal miners and backwoods medicine show more men, of gamblers and marijuana farmers, tales of real tragedy and unutterable strangeness that convey their sense of place so vividly that we feel its ground rise beneath our feet.   Offutt has received a James Michener Grant and a Kentucky Arts Council Award. show less

Authentic voice from the hills and hollers of Kentucky. Some of the stories have a folkloric quality. I loved the regional dialect, laconic and often grammatically incorrect, but direct, powerful, and honest. I respect the the people depicted, poor and uneducated in the traditional sense, but they seem to have an integrity and knowledge of the land that is enviable.
This collection is filled with tales from a fictional Kentucky hill country location. The characters are mostly uneducated though straightforward and some show an ability to progress emotionally or morally if not intellectually.
'Horseweed' was very good in this regard and I also enjoyed 'Nine-ball'.
Offutt's writing is clear and spare and the dialogue and dialect ring true.
