Suleiman the Magnificent: Sultan of the East, by Harold Lamb (7 Sept 1974) Harold Lamb is a synonym for popularized (and fictiony) history. This is the fourth book of his I've read (the prior ones were The March of Muscovy; Cyrus the Great; and The City and the Tsar). Suleiman was about 25 when he became Sultan in 1530. He died in 1566. The book is written from the Turkish viewpoint, and shows the Turks in a far better light than I have ever read before. But even so, Suleiman had people murdered with some abandon, including his eldest son. After Suleiman died the Turks went down hill; but Suleiman expanded the Turks' land to its greatest extent. Interesting story, but Lamb is a storyteller, not a historian. no reviews | add a review

This vintage book is a detailed treatise on the game of cricket, with historical information and complete instructions for bowling, batting, and fielding. "Cricket" constitutes a timeless resource for anyone with an interest in learning cricket. It is highly commended for the novice and would make for a fantastic addition to collections of vintage sporting literature. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on the history of cricket. First published in 1891. No library descriptions found. |
