The author of this novel belonged to the German nobility himself and finds his material in that milieu. The novel describes the dreary and boring lives of a mother and her three daughters belonging to a German royal family, the way they live on their estate where nothing happens. Although set in the early decades of the Twentieth century, the story seems remarkably modern.
L’idea del racconto si può rintracciare non tanto nelle principesse ma in Felix e Streith: chi non segue l’ordine prestabilito dalla tradizione deve esiliarsi, nel caso di Felix, oppure morire, nel caso di Streith.

Auch wenn das Thema des 1917 erstmals erschienen Romans heute sicher nicht mehr top-aktuell ist, so ist der Einblick in die Welt des Adels dennoch lehrreich. Der Roman erscheint allerdings streckenweise so eintönig wie das Leben der Prinzessinnen. Die Spannung geht zwischenzeitlich flöten und bisweilen verliert sich Keyserling allzusehr in die Darstellung von Personen und ihrer Umwelt.
