This book had a lot more intrigue than we are used to seeing in Salvatore’s books. I liked it, but as far as intrigue goes, it wasn’t all that it could have been. I felt my esteem for Pony dropping as she couldn’t rise to the challenge of Danube’s court. Also, a woman does not do her duty as a wife by never rejecting her husband when he wants to have sex! That must be a "fantasy" for Salvatore. That was irritating. The relationship that evolves between Jilseponie and Danube is beautiful. The best part has to be watching Aydrian grow up and watch as he struggles with and against the demon spirit that has touched him. Seeing the elves come to term with the terrible mistake that they made was also somewhat vindicating. They should show more have realized that they know nothing about raising a human child. The much-anticipated confrontation between Pony and her child by Elbryan was a great disappointment. I think Pony should have had more of an emotional crisis when she found out that her child had survived. show less
