Life is hard for the three Stone children. The death of their mother has left them bereft and grieving. Their father tries hard to make things better, but he is busy trying to keep their farm going. Even the land around them seems to have betrayed It is so barren that it is known as sour land. Then Moses Waters comes to teach at the black school at Cedar Corners. Moses can hear things no one else can, like the sound of the grass and the earth humming together. More than anyone else, he seems to have a special understanding of the Stone family. Only Moses can help them out of their grief. But a sour land grows sour people. There are some folks in town who don't approve of the friendship between the white Stone family and the new black show more teacher. And it looks like they will go to dangerous lengths to stop it. show less
This is my first book from this author. It's not till I finished this book and read some of the reviews here that I saw that this was a sorta-sequel to another book by the author. However, it doesn't change my feelings about this book.

This was a chance find in a Little Free Library and the back of the book made it sound interesting, so I thought why not. However, my reading experience was... meh. This is a children's book and is not as detail-heavy in certain matters as a novel on the same subject would be, and I was prepared for that, but even then, the emotional impact it left on me was lackluster. I honestly feel the story would have benefitted from some more fleshing out.

It's not a BAD book... but it's not really that good, either. show more Eh, it is what it is. show less
