This looked like it would be a promising beginnig to a new historical mystery series with a younger Abraham Lincoln as one of the protagonists. I was a little disappointed as I found the writing a bit juvenile and the mystery wasn't that difficult to figure out. I also didn't care much for Joshua Speed and his sister Martha. They didn't ring true. Anyway, if you're interested in light mystery reading, you might enjoy this series. Mr. Putnam does use real historical figures in his cast of characters. Unfortunately I won't be reading more in this series.
I’ll try another one. Could have done without the harlequin like sex scenes , not really sure why the author felt they were necessary to establish the relationship between the murder victim and the protagonist. Not enough Lincoln. Did a fair job portraying him when he was there. Bits on slavery were good. Plot could be tighter, but for a first try, not bad
Joshua Speed, son of a judge and second son of a wealthy plantation owner, now lives in Springfield managing a store. A new lawyer named Abraham Lincoln acrosses his path and and end up sharing a room.
An orphaned girl now living with her aunt is found dead. A previous close friend to Speed, the aunt comes under suspicion and he is determined to clear her name. But there are more deaths to come.
An enjoyable and entertaining well-written mystery.
