I am not a great fan of Eberhart --my impression is that she tends to tell of vulnerable women in sinister circumstances --but I prefer mystery short stories and these were good enough to make the Queen's Quorum list

The cases of Susan Dare tend to go something like this: Susan Dare finds herself somewhere she doesn't want to be and she feels tense and unhappy; the atmosphere is heavy, the house/theatre/ apartment is imposing. She feels uncomfortable in the company of the people she is with, most of whom she has never met before, many of whom she would avoid if she could, and she notes that at least some show more of her companions do not particularly like each other. Before the story advances more than a few pages someone will be shot with a revolver which cannot be found afterwards. Continued show less

Mignon G. Eberhart was born on July 6, 1899 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She studied English and history at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Her first novel, Patient in Room 18, was published in 1929. During her lifetime, she wrote more than 50 novels and numerous short stories including While the Patient Slept, House on the Roof, Hasty Wedding, With This show more Ring, Three Days for Emeralds, and Dead Yesterday and Other Stories. She received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1971 and the Agatha Award: Malice Domestic Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1994. She died on October 8, 1996.
