Description

A brand new one-volume deluxe edition of the first five volumes of The History of Middle-earth, printed on India paper and set in a slipcase. J.R.R. Tolkien is famous the world over for his unique literary creation, exemplified in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. What is less well known, however, is that he also produced a vast amount of further material that greatly expands upon the mythology and numerous stories of Middle-earth, and which gives added life to the show more thousand-year war between the Elves and the evil spirit Morgoth, and his terrifying lieutenant, Sauron. It was to this enormous task of literary construction that his Tolkien's youngest son and literary heir, Christopher, applied himself to produce the monumental and endlessly fascinating series of twelve books, The History of Middle-earth. This brand new collector's edition brings together the first five volumes of The History of Middle-earth - The Book of Lost Tales Parts 1 and 2, The Lays of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle-earth and The Lost Road - into one volume. Set in a matching black slipcase, this deluxe edition hardback is limited to just 1,000 copies and has been printed on fine India paper in order to bring the 2,000 pages of material down to a manageable-sized book. Epic in scope and extent, and featuring dozens of rare maps and illustrations drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien, this first deluxe volume of a planned trilogy will present the reader with a unique opportunity to complement their copies of the deluxe editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with this once-in-a-lifetime limited collector's hardback. show less

This series is excellent for all those Tolkien fans who are interested in delving into the mysteries of Middle Earth. It is great for anyone who wants to know how the Lay of Leithan starts out, or the real story behind the writing of Akallabeth.

A writer of fantasies, Tolkien, a professor of language and literature at Oxford University, was always intrigued by early English and the imaginative use of language. In his greatest story, the trilogy The Lord of the Rings (1954--56), Tolkien invented a language with vocabulary, grammar, syntax, even poetry of its own. Though readers have show more created various possible allegorical interpretations, Tolkien has said: "It is not about anything but itself. (Certainly it has no allegorical intentions, general, particular or topical, moral, religious or political.)" In The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (1962), Tolkien tells the story of the "master of wood, water, and hill," a jolly teller of tales and singer of songs, one of the multitude of characters in his romance, saga, epic, or fairy tales about his country of the Hobbits. Tolkien was also a formidable medieval scholar, as evidenced by his work, Beowulf: The Monster and the Critics (1936) and his edition of Anciene Wisse: English Text of the Anciene Riwle. Among his works published posthumously, are The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún and The Fall of Arthur, which was edited by his son, Christopher. In 2013, his title, TheHobbit (Movie Tie-In) made The New York Times Best Seller List. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
