For generations, the dragonriders had dedicated their lives to fighting Thread, the dreaded spores that periodically rained from the sky to ravage the land. On the backs of their magnificent telepathic dragons they flew to flame the deadly stuff out of the air before it could reach the planet's surface. But the greatest dream of the dragonriders was to find a way to eradicate Thread completely, so that never again would their beloved Pern be threatened with destruction. Now, for the first time, it looks as if that dream can come true. For when the people of Pern, led by Masterharper Robinton and F'lar and Lessa, Weyr-leader and Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr, excavate the ancient remains of the planet's original settlement, they uncover the colonists' voice-activated artificial intelligence system--which still functions. And the computer has incredible news for them: There is a chance--a good chance--that they can, at long last, annihilate Thread once and for all."When McCaffrey's beloved dragons roar and their riders soar upon the beasts' mighty backs...fans of Pern will likely be enthralled." --Publishers Weekly… (more)

Way more scifi than fantasy, this Pern novel starts out a bit slowly as a lot of technical and political background are needed to set the stage for the more exciting bits. There's also something of a 1970s holiday spectacular feel to this one as all the most significant characters from the past create an all-star cast for this adventure. Those who are terribly science-minded may struggle a bit with this one as, by her own admission, the author takes some liberties here. ( )

One of the few Pern I'll mark as (mostly)SF rather than (mostly) Fantasy - all the Aivas and orbitial tasks bump it up enough to finally count in this one. ( )

Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. Such a great book it is so interesting I have re-read it many times. ( )

The usual McCaffrey ride with extra twists thrown in. As I was reading this again for maybe the third time, I wonder if the Dragonriders thought they would be obsolete if thread no longer fell? Read this book to find out. Then read her and her son's other offerings. I've never seen another author touch this ladies' brain for spinning a tale that does fantasy, science fiction, romance, and comedy all at once without sacrificing the story in the process. ( )
