Description

For sixteen centuries the Order of Pythia has awaited the reappearance of the ancient oracle of sacred knowledge at Delphi. An earthquake, rending the earth beneath the ruins, has now heralded her return. Dorian Belecamus, a beautiful and bewitching archaeology professor, sees an opportunity to do more than dig into the past: this is her chance to seize control of her country's future--by becoming the Oracle of Delphi! And she's found just the man to help her consummate her scheme. He's show more brash, he's reckless, and he's fallen under her spell. His name: Indiana Jones. Their adventure spans the globe from Chicago to Paris to Greece, where, bullwhip in hand, Indy descends into the bottomless pit of the serpent god and finds a sacred stone that holds the key to the oracle's prophecies. But Dorian has designed an even more sinister fate for young Indy: she means to make him her lover, her priest, and her pawn in a plot to kill the king. Will Indy find the source of Pythia's powers--or will he find himself sacrificed at Dorian's altar, a victim of her deadly ambition and desire? show less

"Raiders Of The Lost Ark" is my all-time favorite movie. It's what inspired me to pursue a career in television & film production and scriptwriting. So needless to say I had high hopes for this first in the series of Indiana Jones books.

Unfortunately, it's not the swashbuckling, action-packed adventure you would expect from the likes of Spielberg and Lucas. It reads more like those old Louis L'Amour westerns my mama made me read when I was laid up with a busted leg after my motorcycle accident - a lot of talking and history lessons with a little bit of action in between. Not really edge-of-your-seat action, but action nonetheless. I recommend it as a lazy day read, something for a plane ride, or for while you're in the dentist's waiting show more room, but definitely don't expect "Raiders".

As you can see from my library, I have all the Indy books in the series and I'm working on the second now, "The Dance of the Giants". Cross your fingers.

Meh. Indiana Jones is a 22ish grad student, not yet decided on archaeology. The story would have made for a better X-files episode than a feature-length Indiana Jones prequel. Not bad, necessarily. It was still light and fun and quick, but nothing near the adventure and fun of the movies.
Exciting and uncomplicated.
