Description
Miss Dove had taught geography in the same school for thirty-five years; some people in town thought that was too long. Miss Dove whose life at 19 had changed abruptly when her father died leaving her with a secret debt to play, was a stern disciplinarian with old-fashioned ideas and ideals. But on the April day when she was stricken in the classroom the whole town came to realize how much Miss Dove had meant to their lives.Tags

Stumbled upon this at a library sale. I'm glad I did. Sweet story as former students remember the debt they owe to their teacher when she becomes ill. She seemed like a tough old thing. But those kids really learned from her.
This is much more than the sentimental tale of a dedicated teacher reflecting on her life. It offers a critique of the modern approach to both teaching and nursing, and provides a strong underlying message: be wary of the illusory appeal of new ideas. Continued
Good, but I really prefer the movie in this case. I've watched it dozens of times and it has become one of my top favorites. The movie seems to have a better flow, with the characters more interconnected than the book. With the book version, I never really connected with the main character. I just didn't care as much. While the movie is not significantly different from the book, only 3-4 annectdotes added and the ending version modified, it feels more polished, finished and satisfying. Perhaps much has to do with the fine performances of some outstanding actors in their prime that appear in the film.
An elementary school teacher who is regarded by the kids and all she knows as the terrible Miss Dove is struck ill and taken to the hospital. Memories os past students fill her mind as visitors from her past come to see her.
A good old chestnut!
