Wings of Fire is an engaging, thought-provoking work of fantasy. The author's use of language is skilled, and characters and settings are well developed. Mythology and supernatural events combine to present an intriguing tale of good and evil. Highly readable and well paced. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I enjoyed this book and finished it quickly. This book is a creative mix of Russian mythology, Maori legends and Irish folklore centered around a modern day woman who's own past is more complicated than even she realizes. We meet a recently heart-broken Sabrina who finds herself accidentally in the middle of a fight. She is suddenly thrust into a world where the rich fantasy stories of her youth become her reality. Lake Manapouri becomes a magical place guarded over by a shape-shifting taniwha who battles against a vengeful rusalka. She meets fallen angels and selkies while discovering who she is. This story happens quickly, over the course of a day. And it reads just as quick too. Look, do unbelievable things happen? Yes. Do people fall in love way too easy? Yep, that happens too. But this is fantasy book....and fantasy books are first and foremost, escapism. It's a good one. I appreciate Book View Cafe and LibraryThing for the chance to read this book. *I received this book from LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I was torn between giving this 2 or 3 stars. In the end ,i chose to give it 3 (but really it was a 2.5), because as the book progressed it got better. The first 100 pages, were very confusing. I had no idea what this was all about, and i just had more and more questions. The protagonist accepted everything that was happening in a (in my view) pretty unrealistic way, except for a bit of shock here and there. After the first 100 pages, there's more action, some things get unswered, and i found myself more interested in seeing where this was going. However,I still found it a very confusing story This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. What a treat to read a book set in my home country! I have been to the Manapouri area (in New Zealand) and the power station, so it was easy to imagine the scenes described in this story. I enjoyed learning about new (to me ) mythologies and I found some of the twist and turns satisfying and others not so. So many mythologies mixed into one story was also a surprise but then why not?no reviews | add a review
Sabrina had no idea that her life was so deeply rooted in the mystical and the legendary - not until she found herself in the middle of a war between Heaven and Earth, in the company of a handful of creatures whom she had not believed possible before that moment... and not sure on whose side she was on. The adventure begins when Sabrina splits up from her boyfriend... Or is that really the beginning? Actually more the tipping point! This is definitely a must read!
