Lesbian Vikings!!! ( )

What I enjoyed most about this were the changes in the illustrated attitudes and faces of the characters as they overcame the challenges. What I didn't appreciate was the near naked presentation of a people who proudly wore the best they could put together - and well, the idea that Norse women before the conversion to Christianity were particularly subjugated. Norse women of the late first millennium are recorded in the sagas as having more autonomy than women further south. So the milieu is entirely fantasy, and the story rather mechanical, but other than the bikini business not actually painful. ( )

I wasn't expecting much from this. I downloaded this from NetGalley because the description piqued my interest. I did not expect to find a powerful queer and feminist story that pulled me in. This was absolutely wonderful. I found myself falling completely in love with this story of an outcast Viking girl who goes on a quest to free Brynhild, who is cursed and imprisoned by Odin.

I adored this. I didn't want it to end. The artwork was stunning, and done in shades of brown that are just perfect - it invokes an old-time feeling for the story, while allowing for subtle detail. The storyline was paced really well, with what felt like perfectly timed plot reveals that left me wanting more.

I need more.

I checked this one out on a whim when I found it in the bookdrop at work, and I'm really glad I did! It's a very cool story set within the world of Norse myths about a warrior who gets exiled from her clan for loving another woman and who sets out to save a Valkyrie from the eternal curse Odin set upon her. I'll definitely be reading the next one! ( )
