Description
Who is the greatest dunker of all time? Which version of the Michael Jordan was the best Michael Jordan? What is allowed and absolutely not allowed in a game of pickup basketball? Basketball (and Other Things) presents readers with a whole new set of pivotal and ridiculous fan disputes from basketball history, providing arguments and answers, explained with the wit and wisdom that is unique to Shea Serrano. Serrano breaks down debates that NBA fans didn't even know they needed, from the show more classic (How many years during his career was Kobe Bryant actually the best player in the league?) to the fantastical (If you could assign different values to different shots throughout basketball history, what would they be and why?). With incredible art from Arturo Torres, this book is a must-have for anyone who has ever stayed up late into the night debating basketball's greatest moments, what-ifs, stories, and legends, or for those who are discovering the mythology of basketball for the first time. show lessTags

3.5 stars. Well written, but varying in terms of chapter quality. Most of these are think pieces/“what ifs” regarding NBA history vs possible alternate histories, but some are more thoughtful and interesting compared to others, and some (like the one which contains script excerpts from a pretend blaxploitation film staring James Harden) are nonsensical or ridiculous.
In short, a very entertaining read, but when I was through it just felt too “light”—I was disappointed it didn’t feel as substantial regarding what was being written about vs the quality of the writing.

Good fun. Great stories and creative "greatest X of all time" rankings, which I enjoy; some fat, which I skipped. Serious fans (I'm not) likely to give it 5 stars.
I love basketball and I love other things so this was right up my alley. Shea Serrano is my hero and anyone who doesn't agree... FOH. The plot of John Harder 2 messed me up though.
