I first discovered these two detectives in this book and enjoyed it immensely. I was rather disappointed later to discover that the two detectives separately were not as much fun as they were together. The byplay between the cheerfully immoral alcoholic Malone and the spinsterish Withers added up to more that their two parts in other books.
