Haussmann; or, The Distinction
by Paul La Farge

Description
LaFarge's stunning novel of love, betrayal, and exploitation is based on themes involving the life of the great city planner Georges-Eugene Haussmann, who tore up a still medieval Paris and transformed it into the light-filled city that it is today.Tags

Atmospheric, but ultimately not quite engaging enough. I think this is due to an omniscient narrator who keeps the reader at an emotional distance from the characters.
