Es el año 1917 y la primera guerra mundial está en su máximo apogeo. Nicholas Everard es el segundo al mando del destructor inglés Mackerel. Durante un peligroso enfrentamiento con los destructores alemanes, el Mackerel está a punto de hundirse a causa de la ambición y testarudez de su propio capitán, pero la sangre fría de Everard durante el ataque y sus soberbias dotes de mando consiguen salvar del desastre a la nave y a su tripulación.
