Attack of the Snack

I've not come across the author Julian Gough before, but Jim Field is one of my favourite illustrators (we have all of his Oi! children's books and they are a big hit in this house!), and Neil Gaiman has given a glowing quote for the back cover, so I was looking forward to this very much. And it didn't disappoint! This is actually the third book in the series, and I'll be looking out for the other ones. Rabbit and Bear are two friends, and in this book their tranquil life is disturbed by the sudden appearance of a small, dazed baby owl. Bear wants to help, but Rabbit immediately remembers his dad's tales of scary huge owls, and instantly jumps to the conclusion that the owl is dangerous and needs to be imprisoned. Basically this is a show more fable about 'fake news', and about how easy it is to be deceived by loud voices and people jumping up and down labelling 'others' (there's even a fleeting, but unmissable, throwaway nod to the current occupant of the White House). I laughed out loud. I think the Littles and Dad and Mom will love reading this one with them.

Hase und Bär genießen einen schönen Sommertag am See. Mit einem großen Platsch landet plötzlich etwas direkt vor ihnen im Wasser. Während der Bär das interessant findet, malt sich der Hase schon das Schlimmste aus. Das Ding sieht ein wenig wie Grünspechts Verwandter aus, nur hat es ein ziemlich plattes Gesicht. Aber Grünspecht nimmt an, dass es eine Eule ist. Als der Hase in der Aufregung in den Brennnesseln und dann auch noch in den Brombeerdornen landet, ist ganz klar, wer schuld ist – natürlich die Eule. Das Geschrei lockt noch andere Tiere herbei und bald sind sich alle einig, dass die Eule böse ist und ins Gefängnis gehört. Aber ist das wirklich so?
Es ist ein tolles Kinderbuch, welches ein ernstes Thema aufgreift und show more trotzdem Spaß bereitet. Die Geschichte zeigt auf, wie schnell jemand in Verruf geraten kann. Man sollte auch nicht unüberlegt alles nachplappern. Aber zum Glück, erkennen die Tiere, dass sie Fehler gemacht haben und dass ein „es tut mir leid“ vieles wieder in Ordnung bringen kann. Trotzdem geht es auch humorvoll zu.
Die Bilder sind in schwarz-weiß mit einem Hauch Farbe und passen sehr gut zur Geschichte. Schön finde ich die Karte vorne im Buch, damit man weiß, wo sich alles befindet.
Die Geschichte regt an, darüber zu sprechen, dass man andere nicht einfach so beschuldigen darf. Sie zeigt aber auch, dass man Fehler zugeben kann und dass eine Entschuldigung dann angebracht ist.
Eine tolle und unterhaltsame Geschichte über falsche Anschuldigungen und Vorurteile und übers Entschuldigen. show less

Dobrosrdečná a věčně optimistická medvědice Brumla a škarohlídský králík Remcík jsou zase zpátky a s nimi i noví kamarádi! Jednoho krásného dne naruší zvířecím kamarádům letní idylku u jezera prazvláštní stvoření. Malá kulička je Brumle docela sympatická, ale podle jednoho věčně skuhrajícího králíka je to kriminálník všech kriminálníků. A ještě navíc neobyčejně opeřený! Zdá se, že se krásný den mění v ten nejhorší z nejhorších. Ale nebude to nakonec přesně naopak? Příběh o kráse přátelství, umění omluvit se a taky o tom, co se všechno svede jedno borůvkové hovínko.
