Description

A hilarious look at what life was really like inside Saturday Night Live... When 21-year old Jay Mohr moved from New Jersey to New York City to pursue his dream of stand-up stardom, he never thought the first real job he'd land would be on Saturday Night Live. But, surprisingly, that's just what he did. What followed were two unbelievable, grueling, and exciting years of feverishly keeping pace with his talented cohorts, outmaneuvering the notorious vices that claimed the lives of other cast show more members, and struggling at all costs for the holy grail of late-night show business: airtime. In Gasping for Airtime, Jay offers an intimate account of the inner workings of Saturday Night Live. He dishes on the guest hosts (John Travolta, Shannen Doherty, Charles Barkley), the musical guests (Kurt Cobain, Steven Tyler, Eric Clapton), and of course his SNL castmates (Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers and David Spade). Refreshingly honest and laugh-out-loud funny, this audio will appeal to both fans of Jay Mohr and to devotees of Saturday Night Live. show less

I sat down last night to read this for a few minutes and ended up reading the whole thing. I honestly could not put it down. I bought this because I enjoyed "Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live" and I'm also a fan of Jay Mohr. It has a feel similar to "Live from New York" but from a perspective not really looked at in that book where almost all the participants were big stars on the show. Mohr's time on SNL was about continuing failure. It's a story of survival, not success. It's incredibly compelling and even though there isn't really a happy ending to the book if you follow Mohr's extensive carer you know he did win in the end.
I've been positively disposed toward Jay Mohr since the brilliant-but-cancelled Action, and I like SNL, so I was hoping to like this book. But alas. Mohr turns out to be kind of a schmuck, and the book pretty much lacks any point whatsoever. Well, except that of getting a publisher to pay him for it. In that one respect, well done, Jay.
i was expecting great things from this book seeing how it's about saturday night live and written by jay mohr...but i was incredibly disappointed...I don't recommend this

His book wants to document the ugly side of comedy making, but it provides no behind-the-scenes info that we haven't heard ad nauseam every time the show observes a milestone anniversary or some other special occasion.
