The Museum of Mysteries

This was both similar and different from what I would have expected from a Steve Berry work. I liked reading it from Cassiopeia’s POV because we see quite less of her in Cotton’s series but she is such a formidable character.

This one has a mix of Arthurian legends and hallucinatory potions which made for quite an interesting read, but also felt very unrealistic. However, it definitely makes for a fun bridge novella.

The collaboration of M.J. Rose & Steve Berry works very well. I liked the fact that Cassiopeia Vitt takes charge in the story and not Cotton Malone. Although, he does show up. I would have loved it too be a full-length novel instead of a novella so the story could have fleshed out a bit more. But, I do feel so about almost every novella I read that I like. This story was interesting especially since I find the legend of King Arthur fascinating. I do need to read M.J Rose's Reincarnationist series in the future.

I hope M.J. Rose & Steve Berry will collaborate more times.

Cassiopeia Vitt is visiting a friend's antique shop, when a thief runs off with a rare item: an bejeweled Sabbat Box, filled with elixirs, harking back to medieval times. The apparent thief turns out to be a family member of the prior owner, and alleges the heirloom was not supposed to have been auctioned. However, Vitt and the thief are attacked and a third party steals the "pharmacy in a box." One of the bottles is left behind, and Vitt succumbs to its hallucinogenic properties, finding herself transported in time to a battle between brothers. I found the current day story more interesting than the flashbacks, and did not find the pairing of Steve Berry and M.J. Rose meshed well.

The idea of the story’s foundation is interesting, intriguing and entertaining. It’s a fascinating mystery with history embedded throughout the book. The writers introduce Cassiopeia Vitt who is no stranger to Steve Berry’s Malone Series readers. Cassiopeia has compassion in this story, she has extreme intelligence and she is encouraging adventurous in this story. The only flaw I think is in the story some issues should have been more openly explained to the reader and the story needed to be longer. It would have been better as a book and not such a short story.

The captivating story starts in a mountain village in France. Cassiopeia is visiting a friend at the Museum of show more Mysteries, a private area of the unusual and dense unknowable characters to tour. While there, a robbery takes place and Cassiopeia didn’t hesitate to chase the burglar and suddenly finds herself in a disturbing heap of chaos. The chase began in Southern France throughout the streets of Paris.

The story goes back and forth between time scenario’s which leads her on unfathomable journeys. She got involved in an angry contested French presidential election where both candidates had problematic secrets they preferred to stay buried. Back at the museum the stolen object was a wooden box of vials containing potions that would harm anyone who did not know how to use them. So, the French Presidency would be in peril if someone used the ancient potions against them.

Intriguing and great story line but...the ending???? left me hanging...WTH!

Very short - actually a novella - light summer fare - very average
