It’s been 50 years since man first went to the moon, and in celebration of that Jane Yolen and her daughter Heidi E. Y. Stemple have written a delightful children’s book. Simple illustrations accompany the narrative featuring a young boy who dreams of one day reaching the moon. I liked how the authors incorporate the child’s fascination with the moon and the things it took to get him there! Easy to understand for the youngest child, it will open up a conversation about the first moonwalk (and hopefully more reading opportunities), and the importance and possibilities in a child’s dream. This book is for anyone who wants to instill the awe of the world around us with the desire to fulfill dreams in their child’s show more heart.

Recommended.

Audience: kids ages 4-8

It is only fitting to start off a celebration of the lunar landing anniversary with an homage to Neil Armstrong. A Kite For The Moon is an imagining of Armstrong’s childhood and love for the moon that helped him reach great heights.

On an early morning, the moon is shining in the sky feeling a bit lonely and sorry for herself. A small boy wants to make her feel better and so he sends her a note flying high on his kite that he will come to visit someday. The moon watches over the boy as he grows and learns until one day he takes off in a rocket ship to fulfill his promise.

The artwork is lovely, muted earth tones full of movement and expression capturing the growing relationship between the boy and the moon beautifully.

This book is a show more wonderful way to jump-start a conversation about the lunar landing, the moon, or just working to achieve a goal. show less
Dedicated to Neil Armstrong, this book tells the story of a boy who flew kites to the moon, observed it with a telescope, studied hard, and eventually, one day, went to visit the moon - just like he'd promised as a boy. Beautiful.

I loved this book. When looking at the cover I did not expect the story to be what it was. This book tells the story of a little boy who promises the moon that one day he will come and visit him. He sends up some of his kites with messages for the moon also. When the boy gets older he becomes an astronaut and eventually visits the moon. Nothing but love for this book.
Read for my 365 Kids Book challenge. You can see all the books on their own shelf.

It's not real clear to me how much kids grasp of the whole growing up thing, but I like the time span here and I love Phelan's art. The simplicity of both story and art works very well together.
