While the framing murder mystery is a bit lacking the romance appealed to me and felt quite well done. Also, to me, Magnus Haile didn't come across as very rakish, but he did come across as a good character and solid romantic lead. Hetta Champion is a widow and her unhappy marriage left her with only one thing she's glad of, her son (some of the interaction between them does come across as somewhat modern) and while her father investigates a murder she hides in plain site with Magnus, who isn't reluctant. But can he overcome her reluctance to be dependant again.

Interesting and fun read. ( )
