One creative middle-schooler discovers that the best friend a girl can have is the one she makes herself in this charming magical realism read. Jade's life hasn't exactly been normal lately, especially since her dad's cancer diagnosis. Jade wishes her family could leave their no-name town in Colorado already--everybody else does sooner rather than later, including every best friend Jade's ever had. So she makes one up. In the pages of her notebook, she writes all about Zoe--the most amazing best friend anyone could dream of. But when pretend Zoe appears in real life thanks to a magical experiment gone right, Jade isn't so sure if she likes sharing her imaginary friend with the real world. To keep her best friend (and even make some new ones), Jade learns how to cope with jealousy, that friends should let friends be true to themselves, and that maybe the perfect best friend doesn't exist after all.… (more)

This book is about a young girl who does not have many friends. She decides to write a book about a friend. As she writes her story, the friend appears next door just like she wrote in her story. Jamie gets confused. How did her story come to pass? When the story that she writes, begins to unfold before her eyes she decides to write something to see if she can check this theory. Zoey, her neighbors father, gets cancer. Just like Jamie wrote. This story deals with many challenges that students may go through. From having no friends to dealing with death in the family. ( )

Jade is constantly let down living in a town where people especially her friends are always leaving. Her solution is to create a best friend through her writing and Zoe is born. Through stories Jade and Zoe have a perfect relationship until one day a new girl appears who is Zoe in every way. When Jade discovers how Zoe came to be she must decide what is the right thing to do not only for her but for others. While the story seems like your typical middle school friendship drama there is depth to the story. Jade is dealing with her father having cancer and finds out some truths about friends she didn’t even know she had. Author Abby Cooper handles each character’s personality beautifully and the writing captures middle school emotions. ( )
