Meet Me in the Future: Stories

I'm generally not that big into short stories and by way of Hurley's introduction, I might have expected her to do a so-so job with these... but Hurley lies. The writer's talents are equal across novels and short fiction. Sorry, Hurley, you're good! lol

Indeed, most of these stories are pretty amazing, delving not only into her Nyx fiction and Legion fiction and even Light Brigade, but this collection has a ton of stories that kicked me hard from a different world altogether. The only other series I haven't read is the Worldbreaker Saga and I'm honestly at a loss as to guess whether the other set of related stories revolving people jumping corpses is related to that or whether this is a taste of a brand new series to come.

If it is, I'm show more TOTALLY DOWN FOR IT.

It's totally engrossing. :) Taken on its own without knowing any of the other novels, it completely works and showcases so much fungal growth, corpse making, body-horror, sexual-orientation-swapping, space-opera, disease-ridden, dog-loving joy as anyone could possibly want. And the worldbuilding is always extremely intense. :)

I will get around to her other novels, but in the meantime, I am on auto-read for anything new that Hurley throws at us. Eagerly. show less

In contrast to a few of the other reviews posted, I love reading short stories! In fact, it’s rarer that I’ll choose a full novel over an anthology. I had read Hurley’s The Geek Feminist Revolution so I was interested in checking out her fiction work.

I LOVED THIS COLLECTION. For short stories, world-building feel developed and unique; the characters deal with different challenges; and of course there’s present-day parallels and universal themes of love, war, dying. Stand outs for me were “The Plague Givers,” Tumbledown,” “The Corpse Archives,” and “War of Heroes.”

So good. Vivid and compelling.

Short stories aren't my thing. Generally speaking, I avoid them in favor of novel-length stories. However, because Kameron is so awesome I wanted to give them a try. I was not disappointed.
I think one of the indicators of a good short story is at the end you want to know more about it - whether it's about a character, a world, a conflict, etc. and I definitely felt that way about a couple of the stories in this collection. Recommend.

Interesting collection. Like all collections, some stories may work better for you than others. I particularly enjoyed "The Plague Givers." Who can say why?

Some interesting ideas, but sometimes the stories just felt a bit too weird.

Too dark for me. I just can't, sorry. But I'm glad that this perspective, these ideas, are available for those interested. And I appreciate OKC library for buying it. August 2022

The stories ranged from 3-4 stars for me, so I thought I'd round up. I particularly liked the character Nev, who is the main character in Elephants and Corpses and The Fisherman and the Pig. I also thought Garda, The Plague Givers, Warped Passages, and The Corpse Archives were very good.
