A big fat content-rich fictious description of Karl XIII. Intensively laborious to read. Here and there the text gets almost interesting, but mostly it just goes on and on in a even-thick, difficult to penetrate shrubbery of places, names and happenings.
I don’t think it is a mistake. I think the author wanted it that way – unbelievable enough. The test is supposed to give (and almost succeeds) an impression of being a diary, written by the war lord (king) himself. But it gets heavy, with imaginatively old language (language truly from the 16-17-hundreds would be close to impossible to read) and almost fully without dialogues over 807 pages; all sayings are referred to indirectly. Such things do not make a text lighter.

The historian and member of the Swedish Academy Peter Englund has criticised Brunner for “Carolus Rex”, not because it is a fabricated story he squeezes out, but because he doesn’t make up enough. I agree. It never lifts above a dusty History book from school, how ever much Brunner tries.
---
